I know I know. It’s not your typical Christianeese. And it might offend a couple people. But when my friend said this to me, I actually lit up.
She told me “I realized Jesus is such a bad ass!” And I laughed because of her words of choice, because they were surprising and real and raw and not what your Sunday School teacher told you, but at the same time the thought resounded with me.
Jesus has been painted as such a hippie at times. While He IS a man of peace and love, boy does it make me feel good and hopeful and strong to know that He is also the ultimate “b.a.” when it comes to dealing with sin and the forces of evil.
All this absolute filth that we see in our world is dealt with. I know it doesn’t seem like it now, but it’s just a matter of time. Jesus told his disciples, “Here on this earth you will have many trials and sorrows, but take heart because I have overcome the world.” (John 16:33)
The world at times can seem like a beautiful place. But also, so many times, it can seem dark and scary and full of threats. Shootings and bombings and genocide are a daily occurrence. We face the lies and betrayal of people we thought we trusted. We see in our own selves things for which we are ashamed or wish we could change. Regrets over words spoken, failed relationships.
Jesus says He has a plan for all of that.
Hebrews 10:12-14 says,
“But our High Priest offered himself to God as one sacrifice for sins, good for all time. Then he sat down at the place of highest honor at God’s right hand. There he waits until his enemies are humbled as a footstool under his feet. For by that one offering he perfected forever all those whom He is making holy.”
Jesus is not pacing the floor as he looks down at this world. He isn’t wringing his hands, He isn’t trying to come up with a plan.
You know what He’s doing? He’s sitting down. (Something priests in the Jewish temple never did because their job was never done.) He’s just waiting to prop up his feet on the heads of his enemies. I can’t tell you how much I love that visual.
He didn’t fret over us not having a High Priest able to make an offering for mankind since no person on earth has ever lived the perfect life necessary to make a final offering for others. No. He IS our High Priest.
He didn’t worry about finding a perfect sacrifice. An unblemished absolutely perfect life that didn’t itself need atonement. He stepped in and said He would do it.
He isn’t worried about who is going to rule with the perfect blend of justice and mercy. He is High Priest, Sacrifice, and King, all wrapped up in one.
He is able to be with the lowly and be humble without himself being lost. He is able to rule on high and have full authority without lusting for power and overlooking the weak.
He deals with wickedness without being overcome by it. He brings light to the darkness and He will put an end to the evil corruption that has infiltrated our world and our hearts.
He is the One to whom someday every knee WILL bow, the consuming fire, the one who provokes, by His very being, millions of angels to sing to Him about how awesome He is, and who is, at the same time, closer to us than a brother.
There is no person on earth, no superhero or movie character even who fits all this. I like that the best “personification” of Jesus in books or a movie was actually in the form of a lion. I am so glad he is so much more than the long haired dude in long robes telling people the Golden Rule. I’m not interested in that Jesus. I’ll take the real one.
