This is the page where I show you how relatable I am while at the same time letting you know that my life is magical and filled with dandelions floating by my head on summer days.
It’s been pretty close to that.
I was born and raised in Phoenix, Arizona where the only thing floating by your head on a summer day was the air from the fan you were standing directly in front of, in front of the air conditioning vent. Besides trying to stay cool (literally and figuratively I suppose) I was busy playing every sport I could possibly be enrolled in and eventually earned a scholarship to play basketball at a small school in Southern CA.
Loving the proximity to the ocean and my affinity for endless sunny days, I stayed in Southern CA after college for nearly five years, before leaving a great job to pursue my lifelong dream of playing basketball overseas. I moved to Berlin, Germany for three months, ate a LOT of good bread and sausage and ended up spraining my ankle pretty badly and having to leave. Whoops.
Eventually, I landed in Perth, Western Australia in efforts to truly launch my career. Instead of a stellar basketball career I found a husband- a tall, blonde, bronzed, dreamy…
Iowan? Yeah. It’s true. Straight off the farm. We moved to Germany where he continued to play basketball while I grew our little surprise in my belly, delivered our first child in a town whose name I can barely pronounce, and began the world of parenthood. Having decided after spending the first year of our baby’s life in small town Germany that it was time to start “real life” in the USA, I now find myself in pretty much the one area of the country I never ever conceived of living in- the Midwest (is that why I started with “Howdy Ho???”).
All along the way the constant through this vagabond life has been that I really really want to know Jesus more, to be authentic, and to live a WHOLE life. I don’t want just the pieces. I want it all. And by “it all” I don’t mean a NYC penthouse and my face on People magazine ( But if you have access to an NYC penthouse and would like to house swap for a few weeks, hit me up. You will probably also find the Midwest to be like a new country).
What I sort of mean by whole is this:
In the Bible’s book of Mark, Jesus responds to the question of what the greatest commandment is. He says:
“Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one. And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your mind, and with all your strength’. The second is this, ‘You shall love your neighbour as yourself’. No other commandment is greater than these.”
I guess my life has been about learning what this means and what it looks like. In my heart, in my mind, with my hands and feet and my tongue. This blog is an extension of working through that and hoping to bring others along with me.
I’d do what most bloggers do, and offer you to come join me over a cup of coffee, but I still haven’t figured out how they’re transferring that warm mug through their screens.
